MERIDIAN COOP HOMES
History of the Beginning of Meridian Co-o-op
The search for a site after the Westinghouse took over two years. One site was lost over a property line dispute, another was lost over soil contamination. The Co-op got stronger and decided not only would they find a site in the inner City of Hamilton to meet the stiff criteria of the Ministry of Housing, but the site would meet the stiffer criteria that the Co-op set for themselves.
Board’s focus at that time was to provide housing for individuals and families with a preference for a downtown location, close to the roots of Hamilton and the city’s cultural opportunities. A building with many one- two and three-bedroom units was envisioned to meet the needs of singles, seniors, and small families, which were not adequately addressed in other family-oriented townhouse developments further away from the city’s core. They found it at 185 Ferguson Avenue North.
Then the Founding Board completed the task of getting the Co-op built. Building a community starts now, with your move-in to Meridian Co-op. Community Building, once started, is a never-ending process. For over one hundred fifty years, Co-ops have done this by a process called democratic functioning.
Democratic functioning is never fully achieved but always strived for. Meridian Co-op was built on a foundation of the six Co-op Principles, in the shadow of the International Co-op Rainbow Flag. Now, it’s yours.
